Just had to share a cool experience with this game (I'm very early on). This harkens back to how I felt with Far Cry 2 way back in the day. I was sneaking in to take out 10 guys at bandit camp and it was at night. I got one guy quitely, then I heard some screaming and shooting on the other side of the camp. Some freakers (zombies) had come around the border and the guys were shooting and a little bit of chaos ensued. Meanwhile one of the guys ran into their campfire and started on fire! It was hilarious. Just to see the AI reacting with each other and the environment. It really was fun to watch unfold. The freakers and zombies cleared out another 3 for me in total leaving me to clean up the rest.
I thought I'd hate the only saving at the bike mechanic but it is actually pretty cool and works well. Adds tension but hasn't (so far) been a real hassle. Even worrying about fuel adds some fun and strategy to the game. Seems you can save at beds of cleared camps too.

How scripted/staged are hordes or whatever? Will they come through again if you had died or something?

Can't say as I haven't seen a horde yet. I think they'll respawn, yes, I heard they move around a general area too like different activities day/night, sleeping, near water to drink I guess - something like that. So far it feels like a good mix of a couple randoms around, or maybe like 5 or 6 all of a sudden which could catch you off guard and get you killed. Feels natural. Plenty of time can be found walking around an area with no threat. You can hear them and your HUD shows threats if they're there.
I've cleaned out several "nests" areas where you chuck a molotov into their nest then a few will run out you have to kill. I found a bear trap and threw it down in front when I did that so it'd catch one of them up for a bit right away.
The map looks great and has lots of areas to check out. Well done details. Managing the fuel and scrap (to repair my machete or bike etc) actually adds to it a lot. I've been enjoying trying to be stealthy on the freakers as much as possible. Not sure how I'll fare when I do see a horde for the first time lol.

I haven't been able to play Standalone much for various reasons, but I always hoped the DayZ mod would be like that, where zombies could be found in or wandering around the forests or outside of cities and villages, which was an intent at some point, but never actually happened (again, as far as I've gotten to see, which isn't much at the moment).
That could have been the case for H1Z1 Survival, which is now dead (of course), but by the time they threw in enough zombies for players to lead (zombies were always spawned in the world and were attracted from long distances with sound, etc), almost no one was playing it and the Hardcore servers were completely dead.

While most nests I've done so far have been situated where you'll need to kill the ones that run out (or run away and get to your bike I suppose) - I did come across one that was slightly below me from the ridge path I was riding on. I was able to hit the nest with a molotov from the edge and it completed the nest for me so it proves killing them isn't required or totally scripted they're just released into the wild I guess. I just watched them a bit then rode off. That was cool.
So far I'd say zombie AI is pretty good. You can sneak up on a few dispersed in a general area, but you have to be quiet or else they'll hear you or see you. Not sure if they can "smell" you... Human AI so far is pretty good too like I mentioned earlier. At least you can also lose them a bit if they lose track of you for awhile - they won't stay laser focused on where you are at if you move around out of sight.
