I actually haven't played Battlefield 1 since like the week before the latest rounds of maps/expansions came out. The game just doesn't really make me excited in any way. That always leads me missing how much I loved 1943 and BC2 on console, mostly because of how the console controls felt, even though they were technically sluggish as hell by today's standards. There's so much to the feel missing playing on PC. But after they changed the feel of the joystick controls in BF3, I couldn't play it anymore on console.
But anyways, I've said that before. What I've been doing this week is playing through the PS2 version of Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 emulated on PC, of all things. Yes, I am finding that I did have a little bit of nostalgia goggles on for it, just a little bit, but its tone (and pretty much even the gameplay) still tops anything they've had since. It's just that this is another game where... as I'm not a little kid anymore, I see when and where they tweak the difficulty based on your previous performance without telling you. And not even as good as they probably could. Like, for instance, I blasted through 80 of this game almost no problem. Failed 1 as the cops and roadblock placements come to a point of unfairly forcing you to lose just before the final finish line, because there's no avoiding the last one, depending on the track, because some of them are not well placed even though they have set locations. And there's the rubberbanding opponent AI on top of that. And then with my repeated attempt and missions after it, it was a frickin breeze.... And I've found that the cops that are supposed to be chasing me, almost wouldn't even do that... or maybe were switched down a vehicle tier so they were never going to keep up anyways?
I mean, this kind of stuff I just find condescending nowadays. But I am craving playing this game (the PS2 version) online, because that would be really cool because so much about it is so good. FFS, Helicopters that drop bomb barrels over the road in front of you, and EVEN fire frickin Missiles at you once things get too crazy?!!... Hell yes.... Why couldn't those things have remained in future games?.... I mean, I know why they're gone now, as far as I know, but damn it... they were so awesome that they were so good. I don't want your bs "EMP" super powers on a timer.... I want shit to avoid, I want fun tracks that don't make the drifting mindnumbingly easy, and I actually don't want to go at such eye blistering speeds that it's almost always impossible to avoid traffic because you were never going to see it anyways. Just balance stuff a little bit better for multiple human players and this game would be fantastic online.
